Along with other improvements, they envisioned a bathroom update that would “create an oasis,” recalls Case lead designer Allie Mann.

The plan tackled an assortment of angled walls and soffits that made the existing bath dated and cramped. “We squared off door entries to the WC and the shower, which felt like a cave with minimal glass,” Mann recounts. The dark, angled shower gave way to a sleek, glassed-in version, both roomier and better situated. A sculptural soaking tub replaced a built-in tub with stair entry; this change removed unnecessary soffits, allowing the facing vanities—which flank the tub—to be extended for increased storage and surface area. The water closet’s footprint was expanded to accommodate a shallow linen closet at one end.

Mann and her team imparted a spa feel to the space with white cabinetry, white quartz vanity tops and brushed-gold fixtures and hardware. Large-format, marble-look porcelain tile lines the floor and shower enclosure, where teak-look floor tile provides contrast. Vanity backsplashes showcase a decorative-leaf marble mosaic that climbs to the ceiling.

Fresh Flair https://www.homeanddesign.com/2024/02/22/fresh-flair-3/ Thu, 22 Feb 2024 13:16:09 +0000 https://www.homeanddesign.com/?p=85317 Mid-century style and a beloved collection of Heath Ceramics tableware drove the redesign of a dated kitchen in Bethesda. The existing space, walled off from the family and dining rooms, lacked flow, function and panache. After a few years, the owners tapped Erika Jayne Design + Build for an overhaul. “We removed the dividing wall to open up traffic flow,” explains principal Erika Chaudhuri. The structural change also made room for a large central island with seating.

In the reimagined kitchen, marble-look quartz counters top beige, Shaker-style Eclipse cabinetry, offset by a row of sleek cabinets in horizontal-grain, reconstituted white oak. A hood concealed above the range and minimal hardware reinforce a streamlined aesthetic.

Chaudhuri’s clients requested a mid-century sensibility to fit the 1963 home’s provenance, so she selected period-style walnut sconces and green-blue clay backsplash tile—by Heath Ceramics, of course. Open shelving displays the couple’s Heath Ceramics tableware, with its earthy colors and simple forms. Black-finished pendants, ceiling lights, hardware and plumbing fixtures unify the look.

Fresh Take https://www.homeanddesign.com/2023/12/29/kitchen-karma-swabb/ Fri, 29 Dec 2023 16:21:29 +0000 https://www.homeanddesign.com/?p=84359 Clients with contemporary taste called on interior designer Sara Swabb of Storie Collective for a makeover of their 1936 Tudor-style home. Working with Unique Kitchens & Baths, Swabb found a happy middle ground in the kitchen, which punctuates an Old World feel with fresh, modern elements. “The owners love Portuguese design, so we brought in character and interest through that to reflect their modern aesthetic,” she recounts. Situated at the back of the house, the kitchen felt cut off from the other rooms. The new plan remedied this flaw by replacing a wall that separated the kitchen and dining room with a peninsula that opens up the space. Portuguese-inspired niches house the range and prep sink.

UKB fabricated and installed cabinets designed by Swabb, who partners with the firm on a cabinetry line. “The challenge was to fit everything into this tiny space,” comments UKB’s Tanya Smith-Shiflett. Painted in Benjamin Moore’s Aegean Olive, the cabinets continue a color thread found throughout the residence. Swabb used tile extensively—a hallmark of Portuguese design. Bejmat natural-terracotta tile flooring is laid in stacked and herringbone patterns, while the walls are entirely covered in glazed zellige tiles. Terracotta tiles in a bold motif accent the range niche. Lighting and plumbing fixtures impart a modern vibe.

Light + Airy https://www.homeanddesign.com/2023/12/29/kitchen-karma-gilmer/ Fri, 29 Dec 2023 16:14:46 +0000 https://www.homeanddesign.com/?p=84373 A dark, outdated Oakton, Virginia, kitchen got a new lease on life after a makeover by Jennifer Gilmer Kitchen & Bath. “Though the home is traditional,” relates project designer Marie-Josée Parisi, “the goal was to make the kitchen reflect its owners’ more modern style.”

A wall dividing the kitchen and family room was razed to create an open plan with plenty of light. Two islands dominate the space: One for prep houses the main sink and two dishwashers while the other is kid-centered, with room for homework and snacks; an attached band of wenge serves as a table. A column contains wine storage and glassware while a coffee bar and prep sink line a passage to the new mudroom, also part of Parisi’s plan.

A wall of windows overlooks the home’s wooded lot, so Parisi selected sleek cabinetry in a wood-look, gray-and-taupe laminate “that brings the outdoors in,” she explains. Accent cabinets are painted in pale-gray Cumulus Cloud from Benjamin Moore. Countertops in Calacatta Gold Silestone complement both finishes.

The range wall, clad in a stone-look, dimensional porcelain-tile backsplash, showcases a hood designed by Parisi. “It has a traditional form but is made of brushed metal with a polished-strap detail,” she says. “It bridges styles and warms the space.”

Touch of Glam https://www.homeanddesign.com/2023/12/29/kitchen-karma-rosen/ Fri, 29 Dec 2023 16:09:07 +0000 https://www.homeanddesign.com/?p=84351 While orchestrating a remodel in Potomac, the design team worked to ensure the kitchen would reflect its owners’ glamorous style—with the addition of a lighter palette and a streamlined floor plan. “It’s a pretty traditional house but the redo added contemporary flair,” recalls designer Stephanie Fried of Jack Rosen Custom Kitchens, who collaborated with designer Karyn Horn on the project.

The new plan decluttered the congested, choppy layout, replacing dark tile floors with expanses of glossy-white porcelain and taking over a closet in the adjacent mudroom to recess the fridge, freezer and wine fridge. A range wall creates a focal point, and a large island makes a statement with its swirling Fantasy Macaubas quartzite waterfall countertop. Tucked into the passage to the dining room, a desk area became a butler’s pantry/coffee bar containing a prep sink and storage for glassware.

Design choices throughout add touches of glam. Lower cabinetry in a dark, high-gloss finish elevates the room; matte, taupe-hued upper cabinets provide subtle contrast. A dropped ceiling above the island accommodates an integrated hood and track lighting. And the pièce de résistance: A sleek, custom wine unit—replacing an intrusive column between the kitchen and family room—showcases bottles in graceful rows behind walls of glass.

Space Planning https://www.homeanddesign.com/2023/12/29/space-planning/ Fri, 29 Dec 2023 16:03:35 +0000 https://www.homeanddesign.com/?p=84366 While revamping a traditional McLean abode, interior designer Tracy Morris prepared to tackle the massive new kitchen, housed in a modern rear addition. She teamed with kitchen design firm Lobkovich to make sense of the open, 35-by-25-foot space.

“It was such a big room, we decided to create four distinct, task-oriented zones within it” for optimal functionality, recounts Lobkovich’s Emily Neifeld. These zones include primary and catering kitchens and two desk areas—one for kids and one for adults. A wall was constructed to separate the kitchens. One side holds the room’s focal point: a wide niche showcasing the range and a custom, blackened-steel-and-gold hood surrounded by Fantasy Macaubas quartzite. Tucked behind the wall, the catering kitchen boasts glass-fronted cabinetry for display. A breakfast table and bar on the center island offer plenty of seating.

The kitchen strikes a transitional note, with cabinets painted in Benjamin Moore’s Hale Navy offset by an island with a hickory base; hickory also dominates the catering kitchen. “We wanted a rustic element to connect with the more traditional existing house,” explains Morris, who added reclaimed-oak ceiling beams. Wood-veneer wall covering in the catering kitchen, a beveled, ceramic-tile backsplash and understated transitional lighting complete the look.

Cooking in Style https://www.homeanddesign.com/2023/11/16/cooking-in-style/ Thu, 16 Nov 2023 17:30:44 +0000 https://www.homeanddesign.com/?p=83554 The owners of a home situated at the convergence of Harris Creek and Dun’s Cove on Maryland’s Eastern Shore hired Jennifer Gilmer for a kitchen overhaul. “The wife is a serious cook who enjoys hosting and was limited in her cramped and outdated kitchen,” reports Gilmer, who worked on the project with colleague Nancy McCarren. In addition to improving functionality and updating the outmoded aesthetic, playing up watery vistas was a priority.

The design duo partially razed walls separating the kitchen from both the dining and sitting rooms to allow for a series of connected spaces. Unnecessary bulkheads were removed for an airier feel and a neighboring closet was appropriated as a walk-in pantry. The new layout centers on two islands; the main one, embellished with carved, furniture-style legs, handles food prep and cleanup while the other, bordering the dining and sitting rooms, caters to entertaining.

The main island centers on a large bay that embraces an inviting breakfast nook (above). It features floor-to-ceiling windows from which expansive water vistas unfold beyond a landscaped rear yard.

Classic Flair https://www.homeanddesign.com/2023/11/02/classic-flair/ Thu, 02 Nov 2023 15:27:24 +0000 https://www.homeanddesign.com/?p=83510 After updating their décor, Bethesda homeowners enlisted Four Brothers Design + Build to revive the abode’s outmoded kitchen. “They wanted more storage,” recounts project designer Kristen Mendoza. “And they really use this kitchen, so counter and prep space were a must.” Though large enough, the existing kitchen was awkward, with a heavily sloped ceiling that limited cabinet height. Window and door openings interrupted every wall, and a peninsula bisecting the room restricted flow and work areas.

The new plan replaced the peninsula with a central island; it houses the cooktop beneath a paneled, white-painted hood that serves as a focal point. Walls of cabinetry and appliances offer abundant storage and quartz countertops allow plenty of workspace.

Collaborating with designer Cynthia Allan, who furnished the rest of the house, Mendoza devised a crisp black, white and gray palette that conveys a timeless sensibility. Cabico cabinets are painted in Farrow & Ball’s dark-gray Down Pipe, offset by black peripheral counters and backsplash and a white quartz island countertop with a waterfall end. The kitchen ceiling was already clad in beadboard, so the team extended it to the walls for texture and interest. Says Mendoza, “Since kitchens can last upwards of 20 years, we wanted to ensure a classic feel.”

Back to Nature https://www.homeanddesign.com/2023/08/21/back-to-nature-9/ Mon, 21 Aug 2023 17:02:59 +0000 https://www.homeanddesign.com/?p=82080 While collaborating on a custom Annapolis home on the South River, ABS Architects and designer Bryan Huffman worked with Pyramid Builders to create a lavish primary bath with high ceilings and tall windows that would emphasize views of its serene, natural surroundings. “The home is surrounded by 330 degrees of shoreline, and maximizing every view of nature was non-negotiable,” says Pyramid president Bret Anderson. “In the primary bath, windows and glass doors line much of the perimeter while custom glass cabinet doors and shelving leave no sight to the outdoors obstructed.”

An ample footprint allowed for dedicated zones housing the shower, tub, toilet and double vanities—each with its own vista. The owners specified a spa experience, so an electronically controlled steam shower and separate rain head beckon, along with a heated floor. Abundant custom cabinetry is finished with a layer of protective boat paint to withstand the steam from the shower; the cabinetry is carefully positioned for optimal storage and display.

The material palette “is intentionally tranquil and subdued to accentuate the views,” Anderson notes. An interwoven mosaic-marble floor and large-format marble shower tiles provide a refined backdrop for vanities topped with Thassos marble and frosted glass expanses intended to let in the light while preserving privacy. Polished-nickel hardware matches the finish found on pendants and vanity sconces. For a touch of contrast, the outside of the soaking tub is painted in burnished nickel.

Medium Bath: First Place https://www.homeanddesign.com/2023/06/24/first-place-medium-kitchen/ Sat, 24 Jun 2023 20:04:25 +0000 https://www.homeanddesign.com/?p=81144 In their clever design of a custom five-bedroom getaway in Bethany Beach, Delaware, architects Donald Lococo and David Moore maximized natural light and sea vistas. The primary bath was no exception. Though the owners’ bedroom—not their bathroom—fronts the ocean, a clever plan lets them enjoy sea views via a strategically placed, floor-to-ceiling pocket door on the bedroom side. Meanwhile, fins installed on the exterior of a side window screen the bath from neighbors. Blue-glass wall tile and a white-painted double vanity echo the home’s coastal habitat. Sand-colored ceramic floor tile blends seamlessly with the bedroom’s wooden flooring.

Medium Bath: Second Place https://www.homeanddesign.com/2023/06/24/second-place-medium-bath/ Sat, 24 Jun 2023 19:49:25 +0000 https://www.homeanddesign.com/?p=81160 Susan Jamieson of Bridget Beari Designs conveyed tranquility and a tropical vibe in a Naples, Florida, primary bath “with a palette that embodies the distinctive aquas and greens of the Gulf of Mexico,” the designer says. An MTI soaking tub nestles beside a glass-enclosed shower clad in Ann Sacks tiles that mimic rolling waves. A custom wood vanity supports Native Trails vessels while circular, LED-lit mirrors are suspended against a bronzed-mirror backdrop. Jamieson added further interest with boldly patterned draperies. A dramatic Kou chandelier, handcrafted of unglazed bone china in spoke-like shapes, conjures a celestial explosion.
